World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus estimates the number of deaths caused by Covid-19 to be "at least 20 million", well above the official number reported to WHO of "almost seven million deaths". SOUNDBITE
The Covid-19 pandemic killed 13.3 to 16.6 million people in 2020 and 2021, the WHO estimates -- up to triple the number of deaths attributed directly to the disease. The World Health Organization's long-awaited estimate of the total number of deaths caused by the pandemic -- including lives lost to its knock-on effects -- finally puts a number on the broader impact of the crisis. At a Covid-19 press briefing, World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says that the WHO needs 23.4 dollars for the ACT-Accelerator partnership of leading global health agencies to meet its global targets and "deliver the tools that are needed to countries over the next 12 months".
