DOWN BY LAW, the1986 cult classic, and follow up to Jarmusch’s breakout film Stranger Than Paradise, is an exploration of America from the outside-in. As they become friends Roberto makes a plan for their escape. Described by Jarmusch as “neo-Beat noir comedy” DOWN BY LAW features stellar performances and stunning cinematography by Jarmusch’s long-time collaborator Robby Müller. In fully re-mastered glory DOWN BY LAW will have a limited run re-release in September, playing as part of the BFI’s “Jim Jarmusch and Friends” season (9 – 12 September, BFI Southbank) as well as other venues across the country. The film will be released digitally on 15 September and will be one of six films to be re-released for the first time in the UK on Blu-ray as part of the JIM JARMUSCH COLLECTION on 6 October. Other films on the box set are Permanent Vacation, Stranger Than Paradise, Mystery Train, Night On Earth and Dead Man.
A SPELL TO WARD OFF THE DARKNESS, directed by artists Ben Russell and Ben Rivers, follows an unnamed character through three seemingly disparate moments in his life. With little explanation, we join him in the midst of a 15-person collective on a small Estonian island; in isolation in the majestic wilderness of Northern Finland; and during a concert as the singer and guitarist of a black metal band in Norway. Marked by loneliness, ecstatic beauty and an optimism of the darkest sort. Starring musician Robert AA Lowe (best known for his intense live performances under the name LICHENS) in the lead role, A SPELL lies somewhere between fiction and non-fiction – it is at once a document of experience and an experience itself, an inquiry into transcendence that sees the cinema as a site for transformation.
From the producers of Rambo and a producer of Get Rich Or Die Tryin'. There's something dark and seedy lurking in the menacing underbelly of Detroit's suburbs, and police detectives Briggs (Chris Klein) and Shepherd (Adam Rodriguez), and their underworld informant (Curtis '50 Cent' Jackson), are trapped right in the middle of it. Caught in the firing line between street hoods and dirty cops, their desperate bid to uncover the truth threatens to erupt in a maelstrom of violence and betrayal.
Emma (Tilda Swinton), the matriarch of a wealthy Milanese family, lives in a carefully ordered world where her duty towards husband and children dominates. But a chance encounter ignites long repressed passions and sets her on a journey of sexual awakening. Available to buy at: http://www.criticalacclaimdvd.com/DVD/i-am-love
