The leader of France's far-right National Front party, Marine Le Pen has announced she wants to offer the country a referendum on the death penalty, which has been abolished in 1981.

Nicolas Chafoulais, whose daughter Fiona was five years old when she died from injuries sustained in 2013, arrives at court in Lyon. The fourth trial of the girl's mother, Cécile Bourgeon and her ex-companion Berkane Makhlouf opens before the Rhône criminal court. Bourgeon and Makhlouf initially reported the child missing before admitting four months later they had killed her and buried the body. In 2016 Makhlouf was sentenced to 20 years in prison for his role in the crime, the mother to five years. The child's body is still missing. IMAGES
