New Study Shows Women Drink Almost as Much as Men

A new study from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism has found that the drinking habits of men and women in the US are becoming more alike. Although men have generally outpaced women in how much and how often they drink, the gap is closing as women’s alcohol consumption increases. In the study, researchers found that the percentage of those who drank alcohol in the previous month increased for women to 48.3% from 44.9%, but decreased for men to 56.1% from 57.4% between 2002 and 2012. The average number of days women drank within the previous 30 days also increased, to 7.3 days from 6.8 days, while the number of days decreased for men, to 9.5 days from 9.9.
