Mei Xiang, Washington DC National Zoo's female giant panda, gave birth to a cub and is caring for it, the zoo announces. "Mei Xiang picked the cub up immediately and began cradling and caring for it," the Zoo staff said in a statement. IMAGES

Proud mama panda bear Shin Shin munched on bamboo as her new baby panda cub named Xiang Xiang was unveiled to the public at Tokyo's Ueno Zoo on Monday. Journalists and a group of school children were able to get a glimpse of the six-month-old baby cub playing and climbing a tree. This marks the first time in almost three decades that a panda cub at Ueno Zoo has lived to see six months.
