How are the Podemos-backed mayors faring six months on?


Whichever way Spain votes in Sunday's general elections, the country is certain to head into uncharted territory. Gone are the days of the two-party system, with two newcomers upsetting the balance. The pro-business Ciudadanos, and the anti-austerity Podemos, both made sweeping gains in local elections this year and are now hoping to repeat those successes. Our correspondents visit the city halls in Spain's two largest cities to check in on how the Podemos-backed mayors are faring six months on.

    On Wednesday, the US Federal Reserve raised interest rates for the second time in three months. In a statement, the Reserve cited continued economic growth and job market strength in the US as the main reasons. The reserve went on to announce that it would begin cutting its holdings of bonds and other securities later in 2017. The Fed added Wednesday, "The committee currently expects to begin implementing a balance sheet normalization program this year, provided that the economy evolves broadly as anticipated."   • Syrian Manbij City 70% Taken By US Backed Forces

    A spokesman said on Sunday, U.S.-backed forces waging an offensive against the Islamic State held city of Manbij in northern Syria now have control of almost 70 percent of the city after rapid advances in the last two days. Sharfan Darwish of the SDF-allied Manbij Military Council told Reuters in Beirut by telephone, Syria Democratic Forces has cornered the ultra hardline Sunni militants in the old quarter and was fighting them in some parts of the city after seizing most of the western, eastern and southern parts of the city. With the backing of U.S. special forces to drive Islamic State from its last stretch of the Syrian-Turkish frontier, the SDF launched the campaign nearly two months ago. The SDF was formed last year and includes the powerful Kurdish YPG militia and Arab fighters
