80 Boston College Students Sick in Latest Chipotle Outbreak

Description

The number of Boston College students stricken with stomach symptoms grew to 80 on Tuesday, and all say they ate at a nearby Chipotle restaurant. Although many of the students said they feared they'd been struck with the same E. coli bacteria that made 52 people in nine states sick this fall, Chipotle officials say they doubt it's E. coli this time.

  • Chipotle in Boston Blamed for Getting College Students Sick

Chipotle said late Monday that it was temporarily closing a restaurant in Boston's Cleveland Circle after Boston College said 30 of its students, including members of the men's basketball team, complained of gastrointestinal symptoms after eating at the chain. The school said it was working with health authorities to investigate the cause. According to a report from the Boston Inspectional Services department dated Monday, an employee at the restaurant in Boston was sick while working a shift Thursday. William Christopher, commissioner of the department, said at a briefing Tuesday that it was not immediately known if the restaurant's management was aware of the employee's symptoms. Christopher added that the restaurant's permit to operate has been suspended by the city and a disinfection process has begun.

  • 20 College Students in Boston Get Sick After Eating Chipotle

Shares of Chipotle Mexican Grill fell 4.7 percent in extended trading on Monday, after Boston College said students, including members of the men's basketball team, fell ill after dining at the popular burrito chain. Boston College spokesman Jack Dunn said that the students complained of gastrointestinal symptoms and the common factor among the students is that they had all eaten at the Chipotle restaurant in Boston's Cleveland Circle over the weekend.

  • What is going on with people getting sick at Chipotle?

Just when things looked like they were getting better for the Chipotle restaurant chain, a Boston-area location has had to shut down after a worker tested positive for norovirus. Another Boston-area Chipotle was shut down in November after dozens of Boston College students became ill from a similar virus at the Cleveland Circle location. In February, the chain instituted a nationwide one-day shutdown of its locations in a PR move that was also meant to address a series of health issues at its stores that left hundreds sick and hammered the restaurant chain's credibility for high-quality food. In the fourth of quarter of 2015, dozens of people were sickened by E. coli after eating at Chipotle locations across nine states, predominantly in the Pacific Northwest. The outbreak prompted a public apology from the restaurant chain's CEO. The incidents affected the chain's bottom line: Chipotle's fourth-quarter revenue in 2015 was down 30% compared to the same period a year earlier — particularly bad for a company that had been growing rapidly.

  • Chipotle CEO Reacts to Boston College Incident

Chipotle founder and CEO, Steve Ells, apologized Thursday to the more than 120 Boston College students who became ill after eating at a nearby Chipotle, and vowed that the restaurant would be the safest place to eat. Ells told The Today Show host Matt Lauer this week, "The procedures we’re putting in place to eat are so above industry norms that we are going to be the safest place to eat." The Boston College illnesses come as Chipotle sales have taken a serious tumble following a multi-state E. coli outbreak linked to the restaurant chain. Boston College issued a statement saying that nearly all of the sick cases were related to students who ate at the nearby Chipotle restaurant during the past weekend and the location has since been voluntarily closed by the company.

According to the Associated Press, telecom companies AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon recently stated that they won’t provide their customers’ location data to third-party data brokers. A New York Times report in May touched off a major scandal by describing the ways location data, which all four major carriers in the U.S. share with data brokers like LocationSmart, can be abused. This is a good step forward for these companies to make to help protect their customers data.
