Disney Makes Box Office History With $7 Billion Annual Earning

Description

To say it's been a good year for Walt Disney Studios would be a major understatement. With this weekend's enormous $290m debut for Lucasfilm's "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," the studio become the first distributor in history to hit $7 billion in annual global box office receipts. Additionally, at $2.7 billion, it's North American haul is also an industry record, as is it's $4.3 billion in foreign markets. Studio highlights for 2016 include "Finding Dory," "Captain America: Civil War" and "Zootopia," which ensured that the studio had beaten its own record of $5.8bn - set last year - by the end of October, and comfortably surpassed Universal's overall 2015 record of $6.9bn by year's end. 2016 also marks the first year in which all five of Walt Disney's top brands - Disney, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm - have released movies. According to Alan Horn, chairman of Walt Disney Studios, "This historic achievement is possible because all of our film studios are bringing their absolute best to the table, telling great stories of all kinds that resonate with audiences across borders, gender and generations."
