Sentencing Begins for Charleston Church Shooter

Description

Found guilty last month on 33 charges related to a deadly shooting at a church in Charleston, the sentencing phase for Dylann Roof's federal trial is set to begin. The 22-year-old was found guilty of hate crimes, obstruction of religion, and weapons charges for shooting nine parishioners during a Bible study at the Emanuel AME church. Roof will represent himself during this phase of the trial; he plans to call no witnesses and he will present no evidence. During a recent hearing, Roof asked U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel to limit what evidence prosecutors could introduce. He also sought to keep a competency evaluation transcript from being released publicly.
