Floods hit historic highs in the South of Queensland Saturday with houses submerged and people stranded in the wake of Cyclone Debbie which battered Australia's northeast this week. IMAGES
Cyclone Debbie continued to devastate the shoreline of Queensland in north eastern Australia on Wednesday. At Shute Harbour, several buildings were reduced to rubble as the category four storm tore through the area. Airlie Beach along the coast witnessed severe flooding, while overhead power lines were knocked over by the strong winds. The storm, which is travelling at 163 miles per hour is expected to move further inland over the coming days. Relief efforts are operating in full capacity. The Australian government has deployed 1,200 Australian Defense Force personnel to assist in the relief officially dubbed Queensland Assist 17. The military men will be supported by RAAF aircraft and some seaborn contributions from the navy. Politicians including Prime Minister Turnbull and labor leader Bill Shorten are both expected to visit the area one it has been declared safe to assess the damage.
