U.S. Abortion Rate At Lowest Level Since "Roe V. Wade"

Abortion rates across the United States have plunged to their lowest level since the controversial Roe V. Wade Supreme Court decision in 1973, according to a new report. The report by the Guttmacher Institute, a research group that supports legalized abortion, recorded a rate of 14.6 abortions per 1,000 women of childbearing age in 2014 — the most recent year with data available.

  • CDC Says US Abortion Rate Is The Lowest In Decades

According to new data, the number and rate of abortions have fallen to their lowest level in decades. The latest annual report was released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It said the rate for 2013 was 12.5 abortions per one thousand women, ages 15 to 44. That is down five percent from 2012. The last time the CDC recorded a lower abortion rate was in 1971, two years before the U.S. Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision. That ruling established a nationwide right for women to have abortions. The CDC report suggests several factors that are behind the abortion decline. They include a sharp drop in adolescent pregnancies, expanded coverage of contraception costs by health care plans, and more use of effective, long-lasting contraceptive methods.

  • Abortions In USA At Lowest Level Since 1974

A report by the Guttmacher Institute, which supports abortion rights and is the only entity which counts all abortions in the US, stated that the number of abortions in the U.S. had dropped to under one million, the lowest level since 1974. According to the report, there were only 926,000 reported abortions in 2014, which represents a 12.5 percent drop since the latest survey, which counted 1.06 million abortions in 2011. Only six states reported an increase in abortion rates in 2014. Authors of the report claim the low number is likely due to the increased availability of affordable, long-lasting contraceptives that have reduced unintended pregnancies.

According to Reuters, the abortion rates among American women of all ages has fell to a decade low in 2015. Opponents and supporters of abortion attributed the fall to individual states’ efforts to restrict access to the procedure. According to the CDC, the abortion rate was 11.8 abortions per 1,000 women aged 15 to 44 in 2015. That is down 26 percent from 2006, when the rate was 15.9 abortions per 1,000 women.
