Millions displaced by Islamic State in Iraq are set to face a very harsh winter as the humanitarian situation there worsens. Nathan Frandino reports.
Sana'a, Jul 7 (EFE/EPA).- Displaced Yemenis gathered on the outskirts of Sana'a Saturday to receive emergency food aid provided by the Mona relief agency.The United Nations has warned that more than 16 million people of war-ridden Yemen's 29 million-population could face hunger in the upcoming months of 2021 as aid agencies could reduce their life-saving humanitarian programs due to severe shortages of humanitarian funding. Amsterdam residents enjoyed the city's frozen canals over the weekend, even ice skating on their surface for the first time in years. The 'Beast from the East,' a massive cold front originating from Siberia that brought blizzards and freezing temperatures to much of Europe, had a silver lining. The subzero temperatures froze parts of Amsterdam's iconic Prinsengracht and Keizersgracht canals hard enough to support ice skaters.
Welcome to the Russian village of Oymyakon, one of the coldest permanently inhabited regions on earth. Yesterday, the temperature dropped to a frostbitingly cold −55 °C, or −67 °F, but that didn't stop students from going to school. Just to give a sense of how cold it gets, Oymyakon's permafrost remains frozen year-round and it's responsible for coldest officially recorded temperature in the northern hemisphere, recording −67.7 °C (−89.9 °F) on February 6, 1933.
