The Nobel prize in economics is awarded to American economist Claudia Goldin for helping understand the role of women in the labour market. The Harvard professor, who is the third woman to be awarded the prestigious economics prize, was given the nod "for having advanced our understanding of women's labour market outcomes," says Hans Ellegren, Secretary General of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Women's rights campaigner Narges Mohammadi's Nobel peace prize win pays tribute to the courage of Iranian women in the face of reprisals and harrassment, the United Nations says. The award "really highlights the courage and determination of the women of Iran and how they are an inspiration to the world", UN human rights office spokeswoman Elizabeth Throssell tells reporters. Head of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Berit Reiss-Andersen, says they "hope" Iran would release jailed Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi so she could attend the prize ceremony in December.
