Brazil tries to stop COVID-19 spread within indigenous territory

Description

Amajari (Brazil), 1 Jul (EFE), (Camera: Alba Santandreu).- Coronavirus has spread to the largest indigenous community in Brazil, threatening the historical guardians of the Amazon. After centuries of fighting for their right to continue with their traditional way of life, the Yanomami people now face a silent enemy that has already killed at least four members of the ethnic group, including three babies. Their villages are located in the bowels of the Amazon jungle, an area of ??nine million hectares which is similar in size to Austria and home to 28,000 people. FOOTAGE OF THE SUPPORT EFFORTS AND STATEMENTS BY ROBSON DA SILVA, SECRETARY OF INDIGENOUS HEALTH TRANSLATIONS:"WE ARE BRINGING VARIOUS INPUTS AND MATERIALS FOR HEALTH PROFESSIONALS TO USE IN (HEALTH) CARE. THE GOAL IS TO SERVE INDIGENOUS AND NON-INDIGENOUS PEOPLES IN THE INTERIOR OF (THE STATE OF) RORAIMA"."ONE OF OUR CONCERNS IS TO CONDUCT AN EPIDEMIOLOGICAL SURVEY OF THE SITUATION. IT SEEMS TO BE UNDER CONTROL, AND WE HAVE INDIGENOUS HEALTH PROFESSIONALS IN THESE AREAS. OUR AIM IS TO CARRY OUT NOT ONLY THE COVID-19 RELATED SURVEY, BUT ALSO TO PROVIDE OTHER SERVICES SUCH AS GYNAECOLOGY, INFECTIOUS DISEASE, PAEDIATRICS AND GENERAL CLINIC"."IT IS IMPORTANT TO EMPHASIZE THAT INDIGENOUS PEOPLES ALSO CIRCULATE, TRADE AND BARTER WITH OTHER PEOPLE, TODAY WE HAVE (FOR THE EXPANSION OF THE COVID) THE ACTION OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLES AND ALSO ANY EXTERNAL CONTACT THEY MAY HAVE IN THAT REGION".
