Russian President Vladimir Putin's main political opponent, Alexei Navalny, goes on trial from inside prison, in a new fraud case that could see his jail time extended by more than a decade. A video link shows Navalny dressed in prison uniform at the makeshift court inside his penal colony, speaking to his wife, Yulia Navalnaya, while guards stand on either side of them. IMAGES
When Tyra Patterson left prison after 23 years, she kissed the Ohio ground. When Patterson was 19 years old, she was imprisoned for a robbery and murder she has always sworn she didn't commit. And while Patterson's convictions have not been overturned, she's been making a difference in the lives of others while she works to clear her name. CNN reports Patterson dropped out of school at age 11 due to homelessness. While in prison, she became a GED tutor, a paralegal, and a licensed steam engineer. Patterson was surprised with an honorary bachelor's degree from the Art Academy of Cincinnati on October 31 after giving the graduates a commencement speech.
Patrick Balkany, the former mayor of wealthy Paris suburb Levallois-Perret, leaves the Paris Court of Appeal after being sentenced to five years in prison for aggravated money laundering by tax fraud. His wife Isabelle Balkany, who was absent from the hearing, was sentenced to four years in prison for her role in the affair. IMAGES
Malaysia's highest court rejected an appeal by opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim against a sodomy conviction, sending the politician to prison for five years. Deborah Lutterbeck reports.
