Los Angeles County, California, will no longer be subjected to air quality regulations limiting the number of cremations that may be performed there. Business Insider reports the South Coast Air Quality Management District said the regulation was lifted so officials could handle a 'backlog' of bodies. Business Insider reports the move comes as a grim reminder of the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic in California. The regulation has been lifted for 10 days, with the option to be extended. As of January 15, there were more than 2,700 bodies being stored at hospitals in LA County and at the Coroner's office. The current rate of death is more than double that of pre-pandemic years, leading to hospitals, funeral homes, and crematoriums exceeding capacity. South Coast Air Quality Management District
After a month-long argument with the Great State of California, Tesla founder Elon Musk has had enough. According to Business Insider, Musk confirmed on Tuesday that he has moved to Texas. Musk began extricating himself when local COVID-19 restrictions forced Tesla to temporarily close its only US car factory in the Bay Area. Over the summer, as he sold many Los Angeles-area homes, Musk also quietly moved his charitable foundation to Texas. At a virtual conference on Tuesday, Musk pointedly noted Tesla owns the last car manufacturing plant in the entire state of California.
California Governor Gavin Newsom said he is considering imposing another lockdown. This lockdown would be a stay-at-home order, according to Business Insider. This move on Newsom's part comes as hospitalizations in the state spike amid COVID-19 surges. About 75% of California's 7,733 ICU beds are occupied. California hospitals could reach 112% of capacity by December 24th. If these trends continue, California will have to take much more dramatic, arguably drastic, actions.
