Sarah McBride made history on Tuesday night. After winning a seat in Delaware's state Senate, McBride has become the highest-ranking openly trans official in America. According to Business Insider, the 30-year-old Democrat won the seat over Republican opponent, Steve Washington. McBride said: “I hope tonight shows an LGBTQ kid that our democracy is big enough for them, too." McBride rose to prominence in 2016 when she became the first openly trans person to speak at a national political convention. That year McBride addressed the DNC by saying: “My name is Sarah McBride, and I am a proud transgender American".
Sarah McBride was elected in Delaware as the first openly transgender state senator in US history. McBride won a seat representing the first State Senate district in Delaware, reports Business Insider. This makes her the highest-ranking openly transgender legislator. "I'm so thankful to the hundreds of volunteers who made calls, sent texts, and talked to voters to bring our neighbors together." McBride said in a statement. McBride told Vox that she used to experience transphobic harassment after entering the public sphere. However, she described voters in the largely Democratic first district as "fair-minded."

South Dakota has voted to legalize both medical and recreational marijuana. According to Business Insider, it's the first time a state has voted to legalize both types of access to cannabis at the same time. Medical marijuana cards will be issued to patients with debilitating, chronic conditions--subject to a healthcare provider's recommendation. Recreational cannabis sales will be taxed at 15%. The proceeds will be used to cover the program's costs and to fund public schools and the state's general fund. Residents of the highly conservative state will be allowed to possess up to 1 ounce of cannabis for recreational use.
