Brussels, Nov 29 (EFE), (Camera: Leo RodrIguez).- From beer brewing to producing the Pfizer vaccine against Covid-19, the Belgian town of Puurs, population 26,000, has taken on an essential role in the campaign against the pandemic.“We have a good combination for the health of the people, Covid vaccine and good Duvel beer,” the town’s mayor, Koen van Der Heuvel, tells Efe in an interview.Situated in the province of Antwerp, 30 kilometers from Brussels, Puurs is a Dutch-speaking, agricultural town that is also home to several pharmaceutical companies, including American giant Pfizer, which has a factory capable of producing 400 million doses of the new vaccine each year.Around 5,000 people are employed in the pharmaceutical industry in Puurs, but the town is also famous for its strong Duvel beer, which it has been brewing since at least 1871.FOOTAGE OF PFIZER PLANT IN PUURS, BELGIUM.SOUNDBITES OF KOEN VAN DER HEUVEL, PUURS MAYOR.
Brussels (Belgium), 5 July (EFE), (Camera: Leo Rodríguez).- Reuse is a key practice in caring for the environment, but also for the economy, as Sébastien Morvan, co-founder of a brewery that has created a spirit drink from the reuse of beer wasted during the coronavirus pandemic, knows well. Most people come to church to get food for their soul, but some Belgians in the small village of Brielen attend their local place of worship to get a different kind of spirit, enjoying beers on tap after mass. Churchgoers enjoy a few beers inside the house of worship following Sunday mass every week. The church transforms into a cafe-bar after Sunday service because of the village's lack of a public watering hole, after the last bar in the village of 700 people was forced to shut down. Locals can now grab a beer, tea or coffee for just €1 at the church after mass. However, there are a few catches. Drinking is allowed only for those who attend mass, playing music during the time when churchgoers enjoy beer is strictly forbidden and all attendees must leave the church premises at 1 PM sharp. Oddly enough, the local Priest decided that allowing his flock to grab a few drinks in the church would allow the faithful to get closer to God by helping them bond with each other, and the unorthodox practice actually serves to attract even more people to church.
