Hunger on the rise in Latin America amid coronavirus pandemic

Description

Bogota/Washington, May 29 (EFE).- White flags in Guatemala. Red rags in Colombia. Looting in Venezuelan supermarkets. The crisis unleashed by the coronavirus-triggered lockdowns in Latin America and the Caribbean has caused a resurgence of hunger that threatens to ignite a new wave of social protests in the region, where tens of millions of people were living in extreme poverty prior to the pandemic. SOUNDBITES AND TRANSLATIONS OF:MARTÍN CAPARRÓS, ARGENTINIAN WRITER:The most primary thing a person can say is "I'm hungry, I need food" and they do it because they hope for some kind of help, not because of political motivation. Around half of our active population in Latin America lives hand to mouth, they live off what they can get in that moment off informal jobs when they are there.ASIER HERNANDO, DEPUTY DIRECTOR FOR OXFAM IN LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN:(They think) If I go out in the street I have a 10% chance of getting infected, but if I stay home I have a 100% chance of dying of hunger, so I'll go in the street.
