A car becomes an icon when its design DNA and character remain recognisable for decades. It is also important for an icon to provide fresh ideas in order to cope with the challenges of our time. Just like the VW Golf GTI. For 44 years, Volkswagen has been reinventing this icon of sporty, compact cars while retaining the original concept - generation after generation. The eighth reinterpretation of the Golf GTI is now celebrating its debut. Newly designed and engineered - fully digitalised and networked. A Golf GTI that is fit for the modern era. The Golf Mk1 from 1976 has long evolved into a vehicle family. This was followed in 1982 by the first Golf GTD with a turbocharged diesel engine, and in 2014 by the first Golf GTE to feature plug-in hybrid drive. And so it stands to reason that a new Golf GTD and a new Golf GTE are celebrating their world premières alongside the new VW Golf GTI. Three Golf variants, three characters, three efficient and clean drive systems - but one design and specification philosophy. With a system output of 180 kW, the new Volkswagen Golf GTE is just as powerful as the Golf GTI. The hybrid drive is designed for sporting performance and combines electrical sustainability and zero-emission distances of around 60 kilometres with a great dynamic performance.
The powertrain of the new Golf eHybrid produces a system power of 150 kW (204 PS). This Golf is always offered in the elegant Style equipment version and is recommended as a particularly comfort-oriented plug-in hybrid model. The Golf eHybrid has a consumption of only 11.0 kWh/100 km (NEDC). The all-electric range is up to 80 kilometres; the combined range is 870 kilometres (both values in accordance with NEDC).
The secret to the success of the Golf GTI: Its DNA has remained unchanged to this day - clear design, front-wheel drive, agile chassis, easy-to-turn petrol engine, insignia such as the red stripe in the radiator grille and the tartan pattern of the seats. However, the Golf GTI also became an icon for this reason , because at the same time Volkswagen constantly reinvented it and combined tradition with innovation, which is also the case in 2020. Volkswagen has digitized the new Golf GTI, networked it and catapulted it into the future with a multitude of intelligent assistance systems and a design that is as powerful as it is stylish.The new Golf GTI is one of the first compact sports cars to communicate with other vehicles via Car2X in order to raise safety to a new level. The Golf GTI is the first sports car in its class to be driven at speeds of up to 210 km / h - thanks to Travel Assist. This generation is the first Golf GTI to have a completely digitized interior landscape of display and control elements. Likewise, the new generation not only has a red stripe in the radiator grille, but also an optional illuminated LED crossbar integrated in the daytime running lights.The performance of the GTI turbo engine will exceed expectations. The same applies to the chassis, which can be fine-tuned by the driver in conjunction with a new DCC generation (adaptive control). One thing has not changed, by the way: the perfect ergonomics of the standard sports seats, which are of course lined with plaid. And so a compact sports car of pure apprenticeship was created again - it made its first public appearance in Geneva.
The new Golf Mk8 is picking up even more speed. Following on from the GTI, GTE and GTD, Volkswagen is now presenting the next highlight from its sporty family of Golf models: the new Golf GTI Clubsport. This vehicle marks the next chapter in the brand’s tradition of high-performance GTIs: the first Golf GTI Clubsport was launched in 2016 on the 40th anniversary of the iconic sports car. It is now followed by the new Golf GTI Clubsport, a modern compact sports car that not only impresses due to its high engine power but also thanks to a new high in driving dynamics.With the world premiere of the new Golf GTI Clubsport, Volkswagen is writing the next chapter of the successful Golf story. The Clubsport has a power output of 221 kW (300 PS) and is the new flagship model of the eighth Golf GTI generation. With its enhanced turbocharged engine, new fully connected running gear, and the brand new Nürburgring driving profile designed for the legendary Nordschleife track in Germany, the Golf GTI Clubsport marks a new milestone for driving dynamics among front-wheel-drive sports cars.
The design of the new Golf GTI embodies sporty charisma. The GTI has become faster, more efficient and safer in terms of its driving dynamics thanks to superlative aerodynamics (cd = 0.275). The standard LED headlights are positioned low down; they optionally form a striking crossbar in conjunction with the radiator grille. A slim, red GTI line towards the top of the bonnet now stretches across the front section. An LED strip in the headlight mirrors the red line when the daytime running lights are activated – or when the driver approaches with the key. As an optional extra, the radiator grille can now be illuminated as a continuation of the LED strip for the first time. This creates a completely new, unmistakable headlight design. Another striking and unmistakable feature is the large, single-piece lower air intake grille in typical GTI honeycomb pattern. It is framed on the outside by a black appliqué, with a striking wing-like design on the sides. The new GTI insignia also include the optional fog lights which have now been integrated into the air intake grille in an X formation.
