Cinema & feminism: 'We need equality behind and in front of the camera'

Description

The controversy over Roman Polanski winning Best Director at the César awards – the French equivalent of the Oscars – has divided French opinion and reignited the #MeToo debate. Several actresses, including Adèle Haenel, walked out of the Paris awards ceremony in disgust. Iris Brey is a French-American film and TV critic and university lecturer, specialising in feminism and gender. She joined us for Perspective to talk about the César awards, Polanski and why France is lagging behind the US when it comes to the #MeToo movement.

  • A cry for the equality of Muslim Spanish women

Istanbul, May 17 (EFE) .- (Camera: Lara Villalón) "When you put on the hijab, everything is praise. The problem comes when you take it off. The ostracism of the environment, that is what is not talked about", says to Efe Mimunt Hamido Yahia, author of the essay 'They will not cover us', a plea for the equality of Spanish women of Muslim origin.FOOTAGE OF THE INTERVIEW WITH AUTHOR MIMUNT HAMIDO HAYIATRANSLATIONThis book was born and I write it from the need to establish that there are universal rights in the human rights charter and that they are not yet fulfilled, even less in contexts of the Islamic world, to our disgraceThey have treated women as second-class beings, but now in addition to having religion as a reference, there is a religious ideology, and before the 80's it did not existIn Spain, and it is sad to say, it is still thought that the Moorish have another culture and other customs, they do not include us in society, that is why they do not worry about these problemsWhen women born in Muslim contexts and born in Spain say that we are against the veil, we find ourselves with the left parties that tell us that it is a choice, they have the right, and what about the right of women not to wear it?In Spain, let's say a Spanish girl, Mari Carmen, marries when she is 15 years old, it would be something unacceptable, but if a muslim girl, Fatima, marries when she is 15 years old, it is her customs and we must respect them, it is a discourse adopted by the left parties and it is racistThe veil forces women to have certain behaviors, to respect the morality that this idiology dictates for women

  • Feminism powers Algeria’s Hirak for democracy and equality

Algiers, Feb 21 (EFE), (Camera: Nacera Ouabou)- Women, protagonists of the popular movement of opposition to the Algerian military regime "Hirak", remain convinced that there will be no real transformation and full democracy without equality. The Hirak erupted on February 22, 2019 as a protest movement against the then President Abdelaziz Bouteflika to allow him to opt for a fifth consecutive term despite the illness that has incapacitated him since 2013. That objective having been achieved in April, weekly demonstrations continued every Tuesday and Friday to demand the fall of the military regime that has dominated since France's independence in 1962. FOOTAGE OF AND STATEMENTS BY FEMINIST HADJADJ.TRANSLATIONS: - "Women have the same role as men in the Hirak, we fight against the same system except that our fight is a double fight. In this system there are components of patriarchy and a society that discriminates against women, and we fight against that too.""The women's fight is double; we fight for democracy, but a democracy without equality and women's rights is meaningless. That is why female participation is very necessary, whether they are feminist or not. The goal of fighting for change.""Democracy means nothing if we decline or leave women's rights for later""We did not come out to support the men in Hirak but because we are also concerned citizens of this system. As feminists, our reflection was that the time had come to re-politicize March 8 to give it back its meaning as an action to regain the rights taken away.""It was very important for us to organize. We resisted that they say that it is not the time, that it is not our struggle. If we talk about the right of Algerians to a system in which there is equality at work, among citizens, it cannot be said that (these demands) clash with those of women.""To achieve equality, many things still need to be done. Change also concerns women, there cannot be change with or without women, with us or against us. We cannot participate in the demands and in the end we find ourselves cornered as it happened with the mujahidat (fighters of the war of independence)"."A revolution is not achieved in one year, but in several. Of course there has been progress, public spaces were conquered by Algerians. For the feminist movement it was very important because many people joined the feminist cause, they became interested in the suffering of women. It is an achievement, a step forward that will consolidate the struggles for equality".
