At least 31 inmates died in a prison in Guayaquil, as fresh violence spread to the streets of the border province of Esmeraldas, in northwestern Ecuador. Vehicles were burned, soldiers deployed on the streets, and shops are closed. The government also said that inmates are holding 15 guards and two staffers hostage in a local jail in Esmeraldas.
