One in four air samples collected from hospital intensive care units tested positive for COVID-19. The virus particles linger after they treat infected patients, says UPI. 450 air samples were obtained "from close patient environments" and were evaluated. Just over 17% tested for virus contamination came back positive, the data showed. The highest virus concentrations were found in toilets and bathrooms at 25%. Staff areas and public hallways were also high and should be "carefully considered" for stronger cleaning.
Auris Medical skyrocketed as high as 480% on Tuesday. The surge followed the announcement that its nasal spray, AM-301, could potentially protect against the coronavirus. Business Insider reports that the clinical-stage company tested its spray using human nasal cells in a laboratory setting. Researchers found that cells treated with AM-301 right before inoculation of the coronavirus saw effective protection. In cells treated with the spray, the amount of coronavirus was 90% lower than control groups 48 hours after infection. Shares of the Bermuda-based company are trading at over $5 per share, after closing at just $1.1 on Monday.
The CDC used to define exposure to COVID-19 as being within 6 feet of an infected person for more than 15 consecutive minutes. But according to Business Insider, a new study shows a correctional officer got sick after a series of very brief interactions with inmates who later tested positive. That's led the CDC to change its guidance to say that more than 15 minutes of cumulative exposure to someone with COVID-19 puts you at risk. The new guideline informs how health agencies conduct contact tracing. It now stipulates that anyone who has been within 6 feet of an infected person 'for a total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period,' should quarantine. And it's cumulative exposure that matters — not continuous time. So spending five minutes each with three infected persons produces a fifteen-minute exposure.
