Colombo, Sep 22 (EFE/EPA).- Sri Lanka's health workers staged a protest Wednesday demanding proper facilities and protective equipment needed for Covid -19 related works, additional allowance for overtime work, and special Covid -19 allowance. The trade union action was carried out in most government hospitals throughout the country, according to the relevant trade unions. With the third wave of the pandemic hitting Sri Lanka, health workers too have engaged in a series of protests and demonstrations advancing their demands while the government has not positively responded to their claims. Seoul, Sep 16 (EFE/EPA).- South Korean health workers on Thursday gathered to demand guarantee of labor rights after the country's capital region reported its highest number of Covid-19 infections Wednesday. The figures are worrying as Saturday marks one of the main holiday periods of the country called Chuseok, a festival to celebrate the harvest and honor ancestors in which a large number of people travel from the capital region, where more than half of the national population lives, to other areas of the country. UPI reports new research shows it's a very good idea to insist that healthcare workers get an annual flu shot. That's according to researchers from the University of Georgia, Montana State University and Monash University in Australia. They found that states with mandatory flu shots for hospital workers saw statewide reductions in deaths from influenza and pneumonia. They estimate that during the 2016-17 season alone, nearly 2,000 deaths were averted in the 15 U.S. states that had mandatory vaccination laws at that time. The findings suggest that health-worker vaccination laws may be a good way to protect the country's most vulnerable populations. The researchers say it's possible that similar benefits could also be seen with mandatory COVID-19 vaccination of hospital workers.
Dr. Anthony Fauci had previously said it could take up to 90% of the US population to get vaccinated to reach herd immunity against the coronavirus. But on Sunday, he clarified his 'guesstimate' downwards to 70 to 85% of the population. Business Insider reports Fauci admitted on CNN's 'State of the Union' that 'we all have to be honest and humble, nobody really knows for sure.' This month, the US Food and Drug Administration authorized both Moderna and Pfizer and BioNTech's coronavirus vaccine for emergency use. Healthcare professionals and frontline workers across the country have been getting vaccinations since the vaccine rollouts.
800 nurses from St. Mary Medical Center, in the Philadelphia area, walked out Tuesday to protest hospital understaffing. As the third wave of coronavirus cases hits the country, hospitals are reaching capacity as hospital workers continue to suffer from burnout. According to Business Insider, the US reported a record 67,000 COVID-19 hospitalizations on November 12. But the issues nurses are striking over — caring for too many patients at once, understaffed hospitals, and burnout — existed prior to the pandemic. One study in the Journal of Nursing Administration found adding 10% more nurses to hospitals can reduce the odds a patient will die by 4%.
