80 years since the assassination on Trotsky in Mexico

Description

Havana, Aug 19 (EFE), (Camera: Felipe Borrego).- Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky was brutally murdered 80 years ago at the hands of the Spaniard Ramón Mercader by order of Joseph Stalin. In an interview with Efe Cuban writer Leonardo Padura, author of the bestselling novel about the assassination of Trotsky, The Man who Loved Dogs (2009), said that his death marked the beginning of the end of the Russian communist utopia.SOUNDBITES OF CUBAN WRITER LEONARDO PADURA:"It happened in a moment when Trotski was more marginalised and when he had less real power than ever before. He had tried to found the Fourth International, in fact, he founded it in 1938 and it was reduced to a group of half-crazy enthusiasts who supported him. Even economically, he (Trotsky) was in a very precarious situation, lost in a corner of the world, in a neighbourhood located on the outskirts of Mexico City. However, Trotsky was light and Stalin needed to switch it off. This is something that has been repeated throughout history and we are not aware of, to what extent, power has a tremendous need to occupy all spaces."

French President Emmanuel Macron is paying tribute to the heroism of members of the World War II Resistance based at a remote Alpine plateau who were attacked by the Nazi army and French collaborationist forces. Members of the resistance used the Vercors Plateau as a refuge after the occupation of France from 1940, receiving airdrops from the Allies and even occasional visits by British agents with the top-secret Special Operations Executive (SOE) unit. With 2024 marking 80 years since the penultimate year of World War II, Macron is making a series of high-profile commemorations to remember resistance heroes but also to note the role played by native French collaborationist militia (milice) in the German occupation.
