Spain distributes rapid testing kits as coronavirus cases rise

Madrid, Mar 23 (EFE).- Spain began distributing rapid testing kits on Monday in a bid to speed up diagnoses in the most exposed and vulnerable sectors of society amid rising cases of the coronavirus in the country.The first of these kits will be used on health workers, who make up 11.8 percent of all Covid-19 cases in Spain, according to the health minister, Salvador Illa.He told a press conference that a batch of 8,000 items - part of an order for 640,000 - had already been distributed in the Madrid region, the worst-hit area of Spain, and that another 50,000 that will be sent across the country were due to arrive on Tuesday.FOOTAGE COURTESY OF THE SPANISH GOVERNMENT.SOUNDBITES OF HEALTH MINISTER SALVADOR ILLA AND MINISTER OF ECONOMY NADIA CALVIÑO.

Spanish gov't orders partial lockdown in Madrid after a rise in cases

Madrid, Oct 1 (EFE).- Madrid has 48 hours to implement a partial lockdown that will prevent residents leaving the city limits without justification and introduce tighter measures on social life, according to new criteria approved by the Spanish government on Thursday. The capital and its outlying region have once again become the focal point of the pandemic in Spain with a two-week coronavirus incidence rate of 784 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, more than double the national average. Madrid’s regional president Isabel Díaz Ayuso, a member of the conservative Popular Party, said her government will obey the new measures but would challenge their legality in court.
