For President Donald Trump, a positive diagnosis for COVID-19 couldn't have come at a worse time. Aside from the very serious risk to his health, focusing the nation's attention on the pandemic is the last thing the Trump campaign wants to do. As Trump has now been hospitalized, he's all but powerless to reset his reelection campaign around issues like the Supreme Court and the economy. Some world leaders, like British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, saw a bump in approval from the public following a coronavirus diagnosis. However, it's highly unlikely Trump will receive such grace. He mocked opponent Hillary Clinton in 2016 for contracting pneumonia. He has also jeered at Vice President Joe Biden numerous times for wearing masks and scrupulously observing public health recommendations.
On September 18th, 2020, President Donald Trump held a campaign rally in Bemidji, Minnesota. Now, state health officials there say nine people who attended the event have contracted the novel coronavirus, COVID-19. Of those nine, Business Insider reports two have been hospitalized, and one is currently in an intensive care unit. Minnesota's Department of Health spokesperson Doug Schultz says the confirmed-positive people attended the event during their likely time of exposure. In response to these new infections, the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) Party released a statement criticizing both Trump and the state's Republican party. From the start of this pandemic, Donald Trump and Minnesota Republicans have ignored public health experts and put their re-elections ahead of the health of Minnesotans. DFL Party Chairman Ken Martin
Crede Bailey is the head of the White House security office. Now, Business Insider reports Bailey has lost part of his lower right leg and a big toe on his left foot, all amputated during an ongoing battle with COVID-19. Business Insider reports $35,000 has been raised through a GoFundMe campaign to help pay for Bailey's rehabilitation and 'staggering' medical bills. Bailey has been hospitalized with a severe case of coronavirus for three months but is reportedly recovering from the illness. Dozens of top administration officials and White House staffers have contracted COVID-19. President Donald Trump has consistently downplayed the threat. While Trump himself was hospitalized for several days after contracting the virus, he has told Americans not to 'be afraid of COVID.' He's also mocked those who wear face masks, and condemned aggressive state measures taken to slow the spread of the virus.
President Donald Trump's personal attorney Rudy Giuliani downplayed the severity of COVID-19. He did so most recently while receiving treatment for the virus at Georgetown University Medical Center. He called into his radio show on Tuesday and falsely claimed that "you can overdo the mask". He also falsely added that the disease is "curable", according to Business Insider. Trump announced via tweet on Sunday that Giuliani had tested positive for coronavirus. Giuliani has very publically refused to wear a mask and neglected to follow public health rules.
First lady Melania Trump wanted to spread some seasonal cheer to sick children on Tuesday when she visited the Children's National Hospital. CNN reports she continued her annual tradition of visiting them, despite the coronavirus pandemic and record cases in Washington, DC. However, Mrs. Trump also broke the hospital's stated mask policy when she removed her mask to read a holiday book to children. While she arrived in the hospital's main atrium wearing a mask, she removed it when she took her seat in front of a tree. She did practice social distancing. However, the hospital's policy specifically requires all visitors to wear a mask.
