Nigeria's ex-president Goodluck Jonathan, mediating in the Mali crisis for the West Africa bloc ECOWAS, says the organisation would probably decide on Friday whether it would lift economic sanctions against the country. Speaking in Mali's capital Bamako on Wednesday, Jonathan called the post-coup measures imposed on the country by the 15-nation bloc "unfortunate". SOUNDBITE
An Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) envoy says the bloc has "expressed concern over the resurgence of coup d'etats in the region, in non consensual, constitutional reform processes in some member states", during a press conference held in Lagos. Goodluck Jonathan adds "this impacts on peace, security and stability in the region." SOUNDBITE
West African leaders began a key summit to address the latest coup in the region. Emergency talks in the Ghanaian capital Accra were triggered after Burkina Faso on January 24 became the third member of the 15-nation Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to be overtaken by the military in less than two years - which Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo calls 'of grave concern' in his opening statement.
