According to Comicbook.com, "The Walking Dead followed its source material quite closely with the Season Nine premiere. The AMC show aired its Episode 9x01 on Sunday night, with Gregory having been killed in true-to-the-comics form and Maggie and Daryl not exactly seeing eye to eye with Rick Grimes." For the most part the episode only deviated from 'The Walking Dead' source material for the sake of drama. The show's writers do this so the show has a consistent it's tone and also so that it doesn't disappoint the fans.
When Negan was captured in the season 8 finale of The Walking Dead, fans thought the animosity might be over, however when Rick told Negan, “We’re not gonna hurt you, we’re gonna kill you,” fans knew it was no where near over. Faithful followers can’t blame Rick for wanting to punish Negan: he killed Glenn and Abraham; tortured Daryl; and nearly made him cut off his own son’s hand. In the 18-month in-universe gap between seasons have the two rivaling leaders found, common ground? According to UpRoxx, showrunner Angela Kang indicated in a recent interview that there will be no friendship or love lost between the two in season 9.
