Trump To Start The Border Wall In San Diego County

Description

President Donald Trump stated on Wednesday that his administration will begin work on a section of his promised U.S.-Mexico border wall in San Diego. This comes at the request of the major California county. Trump told reporters as his cabinet met at the White house, “San Diego has asked us to go forward with their section of the wall in California and rather than not doing that and letting them lobby for us with Governor Brown we decided to do it."

  • Californians Have More On Their Mind Than Trump's Wall

President Donald Trump will head to a sun-baked patch of land in California this week to view eight towering slabs surrounded by razor wire. They are prototypes of a wall that he says is designed to stop immigrants or drugs from getting across the border between the U.S. and Mexico. But Serge Dedina — the mayor of Imperial Beach, California’s southernmost city- wishes Trump would focus on other issues facing the border cities. Dedina is also executive director of the environmental group Wildcoast. He's led a years-long fight by his city to sue the federal government for failure to protect citizens on both sides of the border from what he calls a “tsunami” of raw sewage, toxic sludge and solid waste that spills through the border region via the Tijuana River Valley. The pollution threatens the health of millions. Dedina says, “It’s billions of dollars for the wall, and zero for everything else. That’s the disconnect. The stuff you don’t read about is the everyday stuff to keep people safe.”

  • Environmental Nonprofits File Lawsuit Against Trump Border Wall

In early 2018, four environmental nonprofits stand in the way of the Trump administration's planned border wall, claiming that the building of the wall would threaten several endangered animal and plant species on the US-Mexico border. The Sierra Club, Defenders of Wildlife, the Animal Legal Defense Fund, and the Center for Biological Diversity have all filed suit against the US Department of Homeland Security over concerns about the proposed wall and its affect on local wildlife. According to the lawsuit, filed in November, the border wall would threaten over a dozen endangered species living in southern California and northern Mexico, including the Arroyo toad, the Quino checkerspot butterfly, the peninsular bighorn sheep, and the Mexican flannel bush.
