The Birth Rate In The United States Is Plummeting

Description

According to new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the birth rate in the United States fell 2% from 2016 to 2017. At just over 60 births per every 1,000 women, between the ages of 15 and 44, this is the lowest birth rate the country has ever recorded. The estimated fertility rate in the country is now around 1.76, meaning women will have, on average, less than two kids each. This is the lowest fertility rate the United States has logged since 1978.

White House coronavirus task force member Dr. Anthony Fauci says the rate of vaccinations against COVID-19 should speed up soon. Business Insider reports Fauci told ABC News' Martha Raddatz on Sunday there's no reason why the US can't immunize 1 million people per day right now. If so, it would put the country on track to meet President-elect Joe Biden's goal of vaccinating 100 million people in his first 100 days in office. Fauci said that herd immunity in around 75% to 90% of the population might be achieved by the end of summer or early fall. According to Business Insider, he explained that his estimate could vary, based on how many people choose to get vaccinated.

But on Sunday, he clarified his 'guesstimate' downwards to 70 to 85% of the population. Business Insider reports Fauci admitted on CNN's 'State of the Union' that 'we all have to be honest and humble, nobody really knows for sure.' This month, the US Food and Drug Administration authorized both Moderna and Pfizer and BioNTech's coronavirus vaccine for emergency use. Healthcare professionals and frontline workers across the country have been getting vaccinations since the vaccine rollouts.

  • All The Bits And Pieces That Your Mortgage Payment Actually Covers

If you've never bought a home before, you may be surprised to learn that there's a lot to know about mortgages. In its simplest form, a mortgage is a type of loan. It's used for buying a home, and it's repaid in monthly installments--usually over 15 to 30 years. According to Business Insider, the payment you finally end up paying for your mortgage actually covers a number of things. The principal is the amount the lender gives you upfront. If you borrow $200,000 from the bank, then the principal is $200,000. A little of this is paid back each month. But you'll also pay interest--the cost of your loan. The interest is built into your monthly payment. You'll also pay property taxes, which are based on the assessed value of your home, and your mill levy--which varies depending on where you live. Homeowners insurance is mandatory, too, and is built into the payment. In 2017, the average annual policy cost $1,211. Finally, you'll also probably have to pay for private mortgage insurance, or PMI, costing from 0.2% to 2% of your loan principal per year.

  • Measles Never Really Went Away, And It Killed 200,000 in 2019

In 2019, measles infected at least 860,000 people and killed over 200,000 worldwide. According to Gizmodo, the World Health Organization says it's a roughly 50% jump in deaths from the highly contagious but vaccine-preventable viral illness. What's more, the novel coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic is likely to make this situation even worse. Outbreaks were especially large and uncontrolled in Africa and Europe, which the WHO says was fundamentally due to the failure to vaccinate. Many countries this year have documented declines in routine vaccinations, including the US. Experts fear the pandemic will thwart the battle against diseases such as measles, HIV, and tuberculosis--particularly in already-struggling regions.
