Tips For Keeping Kids Safe In Open Water

Description

A new report from Safe Kids Worldwide and Nationwide’s Make Safe has some scary findings for parents. Findings from the report, published in part by Offspring say, "More children drown each year in open water—such as lakes, rivers and oceans—than in pools or other water sources." But pediatrician Dr. Marcee White says there are lots of things parents can do to keep their kids safe. They include: 1. Teach your children that swimming in open water is different (and could be more difficult) than in a pool. 2. Teach your kids 5 key water survival skills: "1) Step or jump into water over their head and return to the surface. 2) Turn around and orient to safety 3) Float or tread water 4) Combine breathing with forward movement in the water 5) Exit the water" 3. Learn CPR and water rescue skills White adds, “Learning basic rescue skills and CPR may help you save a child’s life.”
