The Sting Of Political Satire ...'Who Is America?'

Description

Sometimes comedy can sting a little. According to SFGate, Showtime and Sacha Baron Cohen have recently received criticism for their new show, “Who Is America?” At the center of the criticism is the degree to which Cohen is able to dupe the guests, making them the center of political satire, and in some cases, comedic gold. Some of those making unwitting appearances are Sen. Bernie Sanders, and Sarah Palin. The new show “Who Is America?” premiered Sunday July 15, and can be seen on Showtime.

  • Biden: 'Engage With The World Once Again'

(CNN)US President Joe Biden will rightly spend his first days in office addressing the myriad domestic crises that he has inherited from his predecessor, Donald Trump. However, the transfer of power in the most powerful elected office in the world usually means a change in foreign policy, too. And if President Biden's inaugural address is anything to go by, the global focus for the next four years will chiefly be to restore the world's trust in America after the chaotic foreign policy of the one-term Trump administration.

  • Was Mayor Pete The Right Choice For Department Of Transportation?

This week President-elect Joe Biden nominated Pete Buttigieg to lead the Department of Transportation. According to Business Insider the news of the nomination was met with derision and some lighthearted chuckling. "Mayor Pete" had overseen the city of South Bend, Indiana. Their total population is a fraction of what a mass transit system like New York's can handle in an hour. Is Mayor Pete really the right guy to commandeer America's freight, air, rail and road? With a crumbling infrastructure and COVID still raging, only time will tell if he can handle the monumental job ahead of him.

  • Still Donating To Trump's MAGA Fund? FYI, Here's Where The Money Is Really Going

President Donald Trump's campaign is still seeking donations from voters, even though Trump himself has all but admitted he lost to Joe Biden. But donors should know that 75% of every contribution is now being routed to Trump's newly-established leadership PAC, Save America, up to $5000. Anything over $5000 goes to Trump's Recount Account. Also, 25% of all donations go to the Republican National Committee. These funds could be used to finance Trump's life--or his legal bills--or his family's legal bills-- after he leaves office. It could even go toward a possible 2024 presidential bid. And according to Business Insider, all of these would be legal. Despite the Trump administration's decision to begin the transfer of power, Trump's personal plans for life after January 20, 2021, remain unclear.

  • Will Puerto Rico Become The US's Plus-One?

Puerto Ricans have a critical choice to make on Election Day. Business Insider reports islanders will vote to decide if the US territory should move to become a state or be granted independence. If voters decide on statehood, the US territory would work to join the union and fully become incorporated into the United States. Full statehood would bestow constitutional rights on Puerto Ricans that they currently do not have: the ability to vote in presidential and congressional elections. However, there is nothing to compel or force the US Congress to act on Puerto Rico's political status as it is a territory, not a state. According to SB1467, if Puerto Rican voters vote against statehood, then a commission will negotiate Puerto Rican independence or free association.

  • Five Facts About U.S. Presidential Elections

To vote in a presidential election, you need to be an American citizen, be at least 18 years old on Election Day, and vote in the state in which you reside. Candidates tend to focus their campaigns on 'swing states,' where candidates from both parties have won in recent elections. The party with the most seats in each house gets the top leadership positions. That party has an enormous influence on which laws are considered and voted on.
