The head of NATO says the alliance would not be forced into a new arms race with Russia, said Moscow's aggression compelled it to strengthen its defenses. Deborah Lutterbeck reports.
The UN Human Rights Council votes to demand a halt in all arms sales to Israel, highlighting warnings of "genocide" in its war in Gaza, which has killed more than 33,000 people. The resolution, which passed with 28 of the council's 47 member states voting in favour, six opposed and 13 abstaining, marks the first time the United Nations top rights body has taken a position on the bloodiest-ever war to beset the besieged Palestinian territory. NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg says that alliance members must guarantee long-term weapon deliveries for Ukraine, as ministers prepared to discuss a proposal for a 100-billion-euro, five-year fund. Speaking in Brussels, where NATO foreign ministers are meeting to forge a support package by a July summit in Washington, Stoltenberg says "we must ensure reliable and predictable security assistance to Ukraine for the long haul."
