Ukraine's top diplomat calls for the UN Security Council to convene an emergency meeting following the partial destruction of the strategically important Russian-held Kakhovka dam in southern Ukraine. "Ukraine calls an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council and brings the issue of the Russian terrorist act to the International Atomic Energy Agency's Board of Governors," Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba says in a statement. UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemns "in the strongest possible way" the bombings at Kabul airport, which killed dozens including 12 US servicemen and have been claimed by the Islamic State group. Guterres has called a meeting of the permanent members of the Security Council to discuss the chaotic situation in Afghanistan. The meeting will take place on Monday. SOUNDBITE
The United Nations Security Council calls for a ceasefire in Sudan to coincide with the Muslim holy month of Ramadan as conditions in the country deteriorate. Fourteen countries backed the resolution, proposed by Britain, with only Russia abstaining on the vote that called on "all parties to the conflict to seek a sustainable resolution to the conflict through dialogue." The United Nations Security Council demands an immediate end to attacks by Yemen's Huthi rebels on shipping in the Red Sea. The resolution passed "demands that the Huthis immediately cease all such attacks, which impede global commerce and undermine navigational rights and freedoms as well as regional peace and security." Gilad Erdan, Israel's ambassador to the UN, concludes his speech during a Security Council meeting on the Palestinian question by leading a walk-out of the Israeli delegation.
