‘Incredibles 2’ Sets A New Box-Office Record


Disney and Pixar's superhero sequel Incredibles 2 broke a bunch of box office records. According to Digital Trends the movie earned $180 million in its opening weekend. This could be the start of an epic run in theaters for the super hero sequel. The film’s big debut was matched by equally impressive reviews. Critics giving it a 94-percent approval rating and general audiences giving it an “A+” grade.

It is Disney’s fifth animated movie to join the billion-dollar club, along with “Frozen,” “Toy Story 3,” “Finding Dory,” and “Zootopia.” In total, 18 Disney films have surpassed $1 billion. The movie, written and directed by Brad Bird, set a record for biggest animated debut of all time in North America with $182.7 million. It is currently the ninth-highest grossing movie and the only animated pic to surpass the $500 million mark at the domestic box office.

SFGate points out that the 14 year gap between the original film and the sequel contributed greatly to its record breaking performance at the box office, with millennials who saw the original as kids returning to see the sequel as adults. That nostalgia boosted already ample ticket sales from family audiences.

A24’s latest film “Eighth Grade” has set a new record for the best per screen average of 2018. “Eighth Grade” sold out its screenings at its four locations in Los Angeles and New York. According to SFGate, just from those screening the film made $252,284. This means that the film made just over $63,000 per screen average.

According to TheWrap, no previous year in box office history has even come close to that mark after the first six months. If things stay at this pace for the remainder of the year, this year's total box office revenue could top 2016’s record $11.3 billion.
