NASA says it has succeeded in deflecting an asteroid in a historic test of humanity's ability to stop an incoming cosmic object from devastating life on Earth. The fridge-sized Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) impactor deliberately smashed into the moonlet asteroid Dimorphos on September 26, pushing it into a smaller, faster orbit around its big brother Didymos, says NASA chief Bill Nelson in a press conference from Washington. It is the most extreme crash test ever executed by Volvo Cars, and a crucial one. Extrication specialists often use cars crashed at the Volvo Cars Safety Centre to hone their life-saving skills. To allow rescue services to prepare for any possible crash scenario and to simulate the forces that erupt in the most extreme crashes, beyond what can be simulated with ordinary crash testing, Volvo Cars recently took equally extreme measures. For the first time, it dropped several new Volvos multiple times from a crane, from a height of 30 metres. This approach helped create enough damage to adequately simulate the damage found in the most extreme crash scenarios: think of single-car accidents at very high speed, accidents whereby a car hits a truck at high speed, or accidents whereby a car takes a severe hit from the side.
A rare female newborn blue-eyed black lemur, Ikopa, was moved to the La Palmyre Zoo nursery in Les Mathes, France to receive special care due to her fragility and low weight. Born on April 9, Ikopa continues to receive special care from her keepers, who feel her milk every two hours, as well as bits of fruits and vegetables. While Ikopa musters up enough strength to leave her incubators, her parents and older brother can maintain visual contact with her from their adjacent cage. Blue-eyed black lemurs, like all true lemurs can only be found on the African island nation of Madagascar and their numbers have drastically fallen. These primates are classified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as "critically endangered" because humans have cut down nearly all the forest areas which these animals call home to clear land for farming. It is believed that as few as 1,000 blue-eyed black lemurs remain in the wild.
Footage courtesy of the Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines, Iowa shows a newborn baby rhino bathing with her mother on Sunday. The baby rhino was born on October 11 weighing 80 pounds, standing 21 inches tall, measuring 35 inches long. The yet-to-be-named female rhino is only one of seven rhinos in the world to have been born in a zoo this year.
