La Paz, Jul 3 (EFE).- The Mexican state of Baja California Sur, which is home to the important tourist center of Los Cabos, has been suffering its highest spike of covid-19 infections since the beginning of the pandemic and is setting off alarm bells of the third wave of infections in Mexico.With more than 2,701 active cases, 1,698 deaths and some 300 daily infections, Baja California Sur has already surpassed its peak in January, forcing the state government to impose certain health restrictions. California Gov. Gavin Newsom has selected Kamala Harris' replacement for the senate. He has chosen Secretary of State Alex Padilla. Padilla will be the first-ever Latino to represent California in the US Senate. Business Insider reports he will serve out the rest of Harris' term until 2022. California is one of 37 US states in which governors fill a US Senate vacancy by appointment.
After a month-long argument with the Great State of California, Tesla founder Elon Musk has had enough. According to Business Insider, Musk confirmed on Tuesday that he has moved to Texas. Musk began extricating himself when local COVID-19 restrictions forced Tesla to temporarily close its only US car factory in the Bay Area. Over the summer, as he sold many Los Angeles-area homes, Musk also quietly moved his charitable foundation to Texas. At a virtual conference on Tuesday, Musk pointedly noted Tesla owns the last car manufacturing plant in the entire state of California.
White House coronavirus task force officials publicly disagreed on Monday. The disagreement was over California's new stay-at-home orders. Dr. Anthony Fauci told CNN that the state didn't have "any choice" but to impose the restrictions. Yet Brett Giroir raised concerns on Fox News about "overly restrictive" measures not supported by the science." California Govorner Gavin Newsom announced the latest orders on Sunday, says Business Insider. Newsom is shutting down non-essential businesses due to increased COVID-19 hospitalizations.

"After watching last night's debate, this signing can't come too soon," Newsom, a Democrat, said on a phone call. "California tries to lead the way in terms of civil rights, and we have a responsibility to do that," state Rep. "But it has yet to come to terms with its role in slavery." Gavin Newsom signed a bill on Thursday that will create a task force to study the issue.
Convicted "Golden State Killer" Joseph James DeAngelo Jr, a former police officer who hid in plain sight for four decades, arrives in the courtroom on the final day of court hearings.
