Belize Barrier Reef Removed From Danger List

Description

Mother Nature Network reports that after a year of extensive conservation moves by the Belize government, UNESCO has removed the country's barrier reef from its List of World Heritage in Danger. The conservation moves included the suspension of offshore oil drilling. The Belize Reef is the largest barrier reef system in the Northern Hemisphere and second largest in world. It comprises 80 percent of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System. That system was named as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1996. Dr. Mechtild Rossler, director of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, said, "Today’s outcome shows the power of collective action among government, UNESCO, IUCN and civil society and sets an example for the rest of the world."

  • The Great Barrier Reef Has Lost 50% Of All Corals In Past 30 Years

In the last 30 years, Australia's Great Barrier Reef has lost 50% of its coral populations. According to CNN, experts say climate change is a key driver of the reef disturbance. Researchers assessed coral and their colony size on the Great Barrier Reef between 1995 and 2017. They found depletion of virtually all coral populations along the length of the reef. Coral reefs are some of the most vibrant marine ecosystems on the planet. A quarter to one-third of all marine species relies on them at some point in their life cycle.
