'The Birth of a Nation' Sets $17.5 Million Selling Sundance Record

Description

Actor Nate Parker made history on Tuesday when his film, "The Birth of a Nation," premiered at Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. After receiving rave reviews and a standing ovation, Parker's historical epic drama about the 1831 slave rebellion in Virginia led by Nat Turner, was entered into an old fashioned post-screening bidding war that went late into the night at the Eccles Theater. Eventually, the film sold to Fox Searchlight for $17.5 million — making it the richest movie deal the festival has ever seen. Parker's directorial debut, which he wrote, produced and starred in, has been a passion project for seven years. Receiving a worldwide-rights deal from Searchlight, one of Hollywood's premiere prestige distributors, Parker turned down a larger $20 million cash outlay from Netflix, as well as bids from heavy hitters Sony, the Weinstein Company and Paramount.
