The History Of The Electric Car

Description

This is Tesla’s moment. It wasn’t the Roadster, nor the Model S, nor the Model X — it’s the Model 3 that matters, the practical EV for the masses that Elon Musk intended to eventually be able to make all along. This car has been a solid decade in the making. But somehow, it all feels a little anticlimactic. It’s not that the car isn’t awesome.

  • 70 years of Porsche - the myth lives on

It’s a big year for Porsche - the first vehicle to bear the Porsche name was registered on June 8 1948: it was the 356 "No 1" roadster. The history of the brand begins in 1948. Yet the foundation of the sports car manufacturer is built on the life’s work of Prof Ferdinand Porsche - work which his son Ferry continued.Ferdinand Porsche had already designed pioneering innovations for the automotive industry as early as the start of the previous century. In 1900, he built an electric car with a wheel-hub drive, the Lohner-Porsche, on which he would base the world’s first all-wheel drive passenger car.The future of Porsche sports cars is coming up to the starting line in the form of the Mission E, the first purely electrically driven technology champion from Zuffenhausen. The four-door model with four individual seats delivers a claimed more than 440kW and a range of more than 500km, acceleration from 0-100km/h in less than 3.5 seconds and a charging time of 15 minutes for 80% of the electrical energy required. The company is celebrating 2018’s anniversary with numerous activities including exhibitions in Germany and the US. On June 9, the Porsche Museum will hold a comprehensive special exhibition and on the same day, Porsche will be inviting sports car fans to its Sports Car Together Day around the world.

  • The new BMW Z4 Exterior Design

"A new chapter is set to be added to BMW’s fascinating history of roadster-making. The protagonist in question is the new BMW Z4, which will celebrate its show premiere in the French capital. The new version of the open-top two-seater exudes pure sporting pedigree at first glance with its emotionally powerful body design in the brand’s new design language, its classical soft-top roof with electric operation and its driver-focused interior. The dynamic potential of the new BMW Z4 is rooted in a range of extensively upgraded engines, a new chassis design and an extremely rigid body structure. Wide tracks, well balanced proportions and a compact wheelbase enhance the car’s handling agility. And its central seating position, minimised weight and low centre of gravity provide a ticket to intense driving pleasure. The new BMW Operating System 7.0 takes control and operation to an even higher level and makes use of 10.25-inch colour displays for both the digital instrument cluster and central monitor. At the pinnacle of the three-pronged Z4 range is a BMW M Performance model. The new BMW Z4 M40i (fuel consumption combined: 7.4 – 7.1 l/100 km [38.2 – 39.8 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 168 – 162 g/km) is fitted with a six-cylinder in-line engine developing 250 kW/340 hp, comes as standard with features including Adaptive M Sport suspension, variable sport steering, M Sport brakes, an electronically controlled M Sport rear differential, 18-inch M light-alloy wheels and high-performance tyres, and dispatches the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.6 seconds."

  • Introducing Pininfarina Battista - Interview Michael Perschke

A revolution in automotive performance, design and collaboration is revealed with the Pininfarina Battista – the world’s first luxury electric hyper performance GT.Built in Italy, the Battista will be the most powerful Italian-made car of all time. When it arrives in 2020 it will deliver a level of performance that is unachievable today in any road-legal sports car featuring internal combustion engine technology. Faster than a current Formula 1 race car in its 0 -100 km/h sub-two second sprint, and with 1,900 hp and 2,300 Nm torque to hand, Battista will combine extreme engineering and technology in a zero emissions package.2020 also marks the 90th anniversary of the legendary Pininfarina SpA design house, which has taken the design brief for the Battista and produced a classic Pininfarina: an elegant form that seamlessly integrates the car’s innovative engineering solutions that will support unprecedented performance. It is the same design principle of form and function in harmony as seen in classic Pininfarina cars reaching back to the Cisitalia 202 of 1947 and through more than 60 Ferraris, with the latest launched this decade. The Pininfarina Battista’s place in automotive history is defined by its name. • Volkswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak - All-time record

"Volkswagen and the fully-electric I.D. R Pikes Peak have made history at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Driving the 500-kW (680 PS) I.D. R Pikes Peak, Romain Dumas (F) defeated a field including cars with conventional drivetrain technology. In doing so, he not only broke the previous record for electric vehicles, but also bettered Sébastien Loeb’s (F) all-time record from 2013 – by a full 16 seconds. Dumas’ new record of 7m 57.148s minutes is now top of the list of Pikes Peak champions, which includes such acclaimed drivers as Loeb, Walter Röhrl (D), Michèle Mouton (F), Stig Blomqvist (S), Nobuhiro Tajima (J) and also Rod Millen and his son Rhys (both NZ). “The I.D. R Pikes Peak is the sporty forerunner of Volkswagen’s fully-electric I.D. family. Today, we saw what this technology is capable of,” said Dr. Frank Welsch, Member of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand “Technical Development”. “Every Volkswagen employee can be extremely proud of today’s result. • Volkswagen ID. Buggy 2019 at NYIAS Booth

Volkswagen introduced the next member of the ID concept family at the 2019 New York International Motor Show - the ID Buggy. Drawing inspiration from the classic Californian dune buggies of the 60s, the ID Buggy shows the versatility of the modular electric drive matrix (MEB) and puts the fun in functional.ID Buggy is at once futuristic and retro. The MEB chassis integrates a 62kWh lithium-ion battery into the floor and a 201-horsepower electric motor in the rear to give it an expected range of 155 miles on the WLTP cycle. The minimalistic design-no doors or roof on this two-seater-gives drivers the purest experience of classic beach cruising.Like the dune buggies of the 60s, ID Buggy is extremely versatile. All buggies from the 60s featured a high degree of modular variability-based on the chassis of the legendary Beetle with a four-cylinder boxer engine running at the rear. Small-series manufacturers stretched a body made of fiberglass over the chassis and engine of the Beetle, thus writing automotive history. The same versatility is possible with ID Buggy-while the ID Buggy concept car is a pure 2-seater; it can also be converted to a 2+2-seater and an additional electric motor could be added to the front axle in order to make four-wheel drive possible. In addition, the BUGGY's modular design allows for the composite upper body to be detached from the MEB chassis, opening up a world of possibilities for third-party manufacturers, as the original Meyers Manx kit did for the first buggies.
