Facebook-Owned WhatsApp Switches on Encryption for a Billion People

Description

Facebook owned WhatsApp just crashed the privacy debate between Apple and the FBI by turning on encryption for all its WhatsApp services. According to WhatsApp, more than one billion people are using the service. This is a big barrier for law enforcement officials who just unlocked an iPhone without Apple's help in a terrorism investigation. Not only does encryption shield messages from the government but also from WhatsApp. This means Facebook has no way of complying with a court order demanding access to the content of any message. Like Apple, WhatsApp is, in practice, stonewalling the federal government. WhatsApp founder Brian Acton said encryption creates a safer world protecting people from eavesdroppers.
