Soda Pop Causes Brain Damage in Rats

Description

According to a recent study, fructose may damage genes in the brain, playing a role in changes in the brain linked to diseases ranging from Alzheimer's to diabetes. After feeding rats the equivalent of a human drinking one liter of soda per day for six weeks, researchers found they had a harder time making it through a maze and exhibited signs of diabetes and hypertension. According to UPI, researchers at the University of California Los Angeles report that mice exhibited evidence of metabolic diseases and memory problems when fed diets high in fructose. However, the effects of the sugar appeared to be counteracted by an omega-3-fatty acid called DHA, found in fish oil. The study was published in the journal EBioMedicine,

  • Cat Parasite Linked To Common Human Brain Cancer

The common parasite Toxoplasma gondii is spread to people through undercooked pork and occasionally domestic cats. Chronic T. gondii infections are linked to an increased risk of schizophrenia, lowered cognition, and behavioral changes like more risk-taking and aggression. Now, scientists say the parasite might have more insidious health effects than previously suspected. Gizmodo reports new research suggests a link between Toxoplasma gondii infection and an increased risk of gliomas, the most common form of brain cancer. The US sees 24,000 new cases of brain cancer annually, while 11% of Americans over age six carry T. gondii--upwards of 30 million people. So even if the connection is real, the chances of getting brain cancer as a result of chronic T. gondii infection are very low on an individual level.

  • Just Chill: How To Prevent Dying From Heat Stroke

Science Magazine reports increased heat exposure is poised to impact the health of more than 4 billion people by 2100. Prolonged heat exposure can lead to everything from kidney problems to brain damage and organ failure, but a few simple steps can lower the risk. Heatstroke sets in when the body reaches about three degrees higher than the average temperature. Sweating leads to dangerous hydration. So, drink water beyond the point of thirst and immerse your body in water--or at least splash cold water on the skin. If you have to work outdoors, let yourself adapt gradually to the heat by limiting yourself to two hours a day for about a week.
