Is Utah Governor's Anti-Porn Law Grounded In Pseudoscience?

On Tuesday, Utah Governor Gary Herbert signed a resolution declaring pornography to be (quote-unquote) a “public health hazard leading to a broad spectrum of individual and public health impacts and societal harms.” But many critics are calling the “public health hazard” resolution - also known as SCR9 - a master class in peddling anti-porn pseudoscience. Sponsored by state senator Todd Weiler, SCR9 contains no mechanism for enforcement, instead encouraging the Utah state legislature to “address the pornography epidemic that is harming the people of our state and nation” using “education, prevention, research, and policy change.” But defenders of the first amendment worry that should legislators base public policy on the resolution, they would be doing so in the service of specious reasoning and scientifically unsubstantiated claims. Opponents of the measure also worry that the resolution violates the separation of church and state, as much of it is informed by the Mormon church, and its views on pornography and sexuality.
