With nowhere to go, the residents that left behind, are trying to survive without gas, water, and with severe food shortages. On top of that temperatures are below freezing in the cold of winter.
With many of the coal and iron mines damaged or destroyed by the war, many former miners have joined the pro-Russian separatists in their fight in eastern Ukraine. The industrial east of the country has become a key target in the conflict as mining accounted for 16% of Ukraine's GDP before the war.
