Academy takes 'historic' steps to increase diversity

Description

The board of governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences approved dramatic changes to alter its membership to increase diversity in a unanimous vote Thursday night. The ignominiously-dubbed #AllWhiteOscars has led to outcry as well as director Spike Lee, actress Jada Pinkett Smith and her husband Will Smith to boycott the February 28 Oscars hosted by Chris Rock. Here are some of the other diversity enhancing steps the academy announced Friday: Potential limits for existing members:  The academy set out to limit the voting powers of members not active in the film industry. Bringing in new members:  The academy will supplement the "traditional process in which members sponsor new members" by launching an "ambitious, global campaign to identify and recruit qualified new members who represent greater diversity," according to the academy release.

SOUND BITE: PEI ZHAOYU, DEPUTY DIRECTOR OF THE LUNAR EXPLORATION AND SPACE PROGRAM CENTER OF THE CHINA NATIONAL SPACE ADMINISTRATION (IN MANDARIN).TRANSLATION:- We have mastered the main technologies of lunar exploration and we will continue to carry out lunar exploration in the future. Our idea is to make this exploration more and more open as well as promote cooperation between countries. Foreign scientists will be able to study our samples.- 80 percent of the lunar samples we brought back will be used for scientific research. The remaining 20 percent will be permanently stored."- It is true that the United States and the Soviet Union achieved brilliant results in their exploration programs, but if the other countries do not explore, we would always be at the expense of listening to what others are saying.
