  • Twin Pandas Get Names At Atlanta Zoo

Two twin pandas, formerly known as Cub A and Cub B, received names during a naming ceremony on Monday at Zoo Atlanta. They will now go by the names Ya Lun and Xi Lun. Together their names mean " "Lun Lun's elegant and happy daughters." They are the sixth and seventh offspring off Lun Lun and Yang Yang. It's been 100 days since the twins were born. The 100-day naming ceremony is a Chinese tradition that Zoo Atlanta has followed with all of the cubs' older brothers and sisters as well.

  • Zoo Atlanta Celebrates Birth Of Twin Pandas

On Saturday at Zoo Atlanta, the zoological park in Atlanta, Georgia, Lun Lun the Giant panda gave birth to twins. These are the first giant pandas to be born in the United States this year. The animal species, which mainly lives in a few mountain ranges in the Sichuan province of central China, has seen its numbers dwindle as a result of farming, deforestation, and other development - but thanks to concerted efforts of wildlife agencies and a rebounding population in their native China, the Giant panda has recently been upgraded, from "endangered" to "vulnerable."

  • Twin Giant Pandas Are Born In A Austrian Zoo

The giant panda that gave birth at Vienna's Schoenbrunn Zoo last week was hiding a tiny little secret — an extra cub. The zoo originally announced the birth of a cub in August. On Tuesday the zoo said mother Yang Yang actually bore twins, her fourth and fifth cubs after Fu Long, Fu Hu and Fu Bao. And newborn pandas are tiny: The cub whose birth was announced last week was just 4 inches long and weighed 3.5 ounces.

  • Zookeepers Optimistic About Survival Chances for Twin Pandas

In more than three decades of trying to breed pandas at the National Zoo there's been plenty of heartbreak. More cubs born in Washington have died than survived, and news of a birth has often been greeted warily. But on Sunday, zoo officials were nearly giddy. They don't just have an apparently healthy pair of twins born Saturday night to panda mom Mei Xiang. They have a template to follow that gives the cubs a strong chance of survival. Pandas won't usually nurse twins if left to their own devices. There's no timetable for performing genetic testing, and zoo officials said it will be three to four weeks before their genders are known. The cubs won't be named until they are 100 days old, per Chinese tradition. Bao Bao didn't make her public debut until she was 5 months old, but the cubs and Mei Xiang will be visible on the zoo's popular "Panda Cam" livestream.
