It's often said that 'breast is best,' and now, new research from Japan reveals another reason mothers may choose to pass on cow's milk-based formula. Japanese research says infants who receive cow's milk-based formula in addition to breast milk are nearly twice as likely to develop asthma or recurrent wheeze. Specifically, among infants who received milk formula as a supplement to breastfeeding from birth to 5 months, 18% developed asthma or recurrent wheezing. But just 10% of the infants who were either breastfed only, or who received breast milk plus amino acid-based elemental formula, had such problems. The researchers suggest that human breast milk may contain certain unknown nutrients that bolster babies' immune systems and gut bacteria.
Tamara Ecclestone had so much breast milk left over after her daughter switched to formula that she gave it to another mother she met online.
Retail mannequins are sometimes used to send messages to the public, like the plus sized mannequins which were used to raise body awareness. Shoppers walking through Bogota's largest mall were surprised to see breast-feeding mannequins in the windows of their favourite clothing shops over the past weekend as part of an initiative to change attitudes about breast feeding in public. Shop assistants put a "baby" mannequin in the arms of a "mother" mannequin, mimicking the act of a mother feeding her baby. The breast-feeding mannequin campaign was launched by the "Friends of Breast-feeding" organisation. They are set to be on display throughout the whole of April, aiming to raise awareness of the right of mothers to breast-fed their children in public places. Although 47 out of 50 states in America fully protect breast feeding moms, attitudes toward breast-feeding remain negative in many places, with mothers being told to cover up or even leave when breastfeeding. Advocates of public breastfeeding claim that it's simply a biological necessity - babies can get hungry anywhere and breastfeeding allows nursing moms to feed their infant on the go. What do you think about public breast feeding?
