Volvo Introduces Car Without Pedals Or A Steering Wheel

Description

According to Digital Trends, Volvo's revolutionary 360c concept car embodies the big changes taking place in the auto industry. They recently revealed the new 360c concept at Volvo’s headquarters in Gothenburg, Sweden. The car is electric and fully autonomous, but likely won’t ever reach mass production. Digital Trends explains, "Volvo won’t replace the XC40 with a box on wheels that turns the driver into a passenger. The concept merely explores what could be possible in a few years’ time if technology advances at the rate decision-makers predict it will." Volvo wants people to imagine the pedal and steering wheel free car as something that could be part of a commute. Digital Trends adds, "Imagine flying from Frankfurt to New York City and hopping in a Delta-operated, Volvo-built 360c-like shuttle from JFK to Philadelphia. Or, with the right infrastructure, taking one overnight from Berlin to Copenhagen." There are two different interior concepts for the car. One includes a lounge with a table and four seats. Another seating setup includes "a private pod with a single seat that reclines into a bed for full luxury on longer trips."

  • Volvo's Patent: Slide Steering Wheel Out

Volvo Volvo filed a patent application for a steering wheel that slides side to side within a car's cabin. The design would allow passengers in a highly automated vehicle of the future to move the steering wheel out of the way and have more room to stretch out. Although driver-assistance systems are the new craze, true autonomous vehicles — cars that will allow for driving without any human intervention — are still nowhere close to hitting the streets. The feature could also come into play in a highly automated future vehicle, enabling passengers to slide the wheel out of the way when the driver-assistance system takes over, according to the filing.
