Google Employees Considered Manipulating Search Results

Description

Google could be in more hot water over it's latest admissions. Business Insider says the company disclosed discussions about manipulating search results. The internal discussion between Google employees happened in 2017. An undisclosed number of employees discussed ways that they could manipulate search results. The Wall Street Journal reports the manipulation would protest President Trump's travel ban.

    Business Insider reports that Apple is creating its own search engine. Apple's move is in response to the Department of Justice anti-trust investigation into Google. The Financial Times says that Apple now shows its own results through a search box on iPhone home screens. It's available through Apple's update to iOS 14. Google has been the iPhone's default search engine for more than 10 years. But Apple's partnership with Google is under threat from the DOJ's Anti-Trust investigation.

    Gizmodo reports San Francisco and Alameda counties in California have stopped using Verily to test for the novel coronavirus. Google's health-centered sister company launched a $55 million pilot COVID-19 testing program earlier this year to set up mobile and stationary test sites. However, Verily’s services weren’t geared towards filling the needs of communities especially vulnerable to the pandemic. Specifically, the services put people of color, those with low income, and the homeless at a disadvantage for using Verily's site and accessing test results. Another complaint was that Verily reserves the right to use collected data for 'commercial product research and development.' While Verily says strict privacy controls are in place, critics say the system may still violate federal health data privacy laws.
